10 Ways to Beat the Summer Slump

Now that summer is here, there are a million ways to take advantage of the warm temperatures. But in the midst of the year's hottest months, have you stopped to check your energy levels? Sometimes, the summer season can take a toll on the body - no matter how much fun you are having.

Hot days and consistent humidity can zap energy and leave you feeling lethargic. So how can you pull yourself out of the summer slump - mentally and physically? Here are 10 tips to keep you feeling fresh this summer:

  1. Make your sleep routine a priority

Taking steps to ensure you are getting restful sleep is important any time of year, but especially in the summer when daylight is longer and you don't want to miss out on any fun.

  2. Set a goal for your daily water intake

Summer is the perfect time to challenge yourself to drink more water, so add an extra 1-2 glasses to your daily intake. Staying hydrated is key to keeping yourself alert and focused.

  3. Plan a mini-summer getaway

Even if you don't have time for a full vacation, book a weekend or Saturday trip somewhere new. Get away from the hustle and bustle of your normal routine and take in new sights. It might just be an air-conditioned café across town, but the change of scenery can make you feel renewed.

  4. Get creative with your meals

Instead of turning on the oven to cook dinner like you usually do, get creative with the backyard grill. This recipe for grilled stone fruit is a great place to start.

  5. And get creative with your desserts.

You can also turn dessert into a seasonal affair. A scoop of homemade ice cream is a great way to cool off while keeping your healthy eating habits in mind.

  6. Take the afternoon off

The lazy days of summer are meant to be enjoyed. Kick back on the patio or spend an afternoon by the pool. A little time to "disconnect and reflect" can do wonders for mind, body and soul.

  7. Stay fueled, even on the go

An empty stomach and long hours outside? That's a bad combination in the summer. Before you head out for the day, make sure you are packing healthy snacks to keep you fueled throughout the day.

  8. Modify your fitness routine

Working out in the summer can get challenging as temperatures rise. Consider modifying your regular routine with indoor workouts (using top-of-the-line indoor fitness equipment we should add!) or opting for a quick workout when it's just too hot outside.

  9. Find a new way to combat stress

Summer isn't always carefree. If you are feeling the stress of work, school or daily life, find new ways to reduce negative feelings. Activities like hiking, outdoor yoga or swimming are great when the weather is nice.

  10. Declutter your space

Take some time to clear out unwanted clothes, books and other items from around the house. A thorough cleaning doesn't have to wait until spring.
