Five Fitness Trends to Try in 2017

Every year, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) releases a report on the top fitness trends for the coming year. For the second year in a row, wearable technology claimed the top spot. As technology becomes more incorporated into our daily lives, it is no surprise that it has become a part of our workouts as well.

More than 2,800 health and fitness professionals shared what trends they see gaining even more popularity in 2017. Here are the top fitness trends to try in 2017:

  1. Wearable Technology

More than ever, people want instant feedback on their workouts. Many find motivation in knowing how many steps they've walked or how many calories they've burned. Activity trackers and other technology devices, like the Bluetooth® enabled Bowflex® SelectTech® 560 Dumbbells, offer instant feedback throughout your workout and can be paired with your favorite fitness tracking apps.

  2. Bodyweight Training

This low-cost fitness trend utilizes minimal equipment and allows you to work out anywhere. Bodyweight training is a great way to strengthen your core, increase flexibility and improve balance. Bowflex Fitness Advisor Tom Holland shared three of his favorite bodyweight exercises that you can try today.

  3. High-intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

These time-efficient exercises are ideal for people who want to get the most out of every minute of their workout. Combining short bursts of movement followed by short periods of rest, these workouts offer excellent results in little time. This type of training is what inspired the Bowflex Max Trainer's 14-minute Max Interval workout. Have a few minutes to spare? Try this five-minute HIIT workout, also designed by Tom Holland.

  4. Strength Training

This long-time trend is seen as one of the pillars of fitness. A common misconception though, is that strength training is all about building bulk, when it really has so many other benefits to your body health. Strength training is an important part of keeping your muscles in top condition to perform everyday tasks and prevent injury. It is great for exercisers of all levels and ages, and Bowflex has some of the best at-home strength training equipment.  If you're new to strength training, give our upper body strength training workout for beginners and lower body strength training workout for beginners a try.

  5. Group Training

Group workouts provide the perfect way to stay motivated and hold yourself accountable. With group fitness studios popping up all over the country, it is easy to wonder what all the fuss is about. Friendly competition against others who are working out with you has been proven as one of the best forms of motivation. If workout classes are not your style, try working out with a friend to keep each other moving and power through your workout.
