What You Need to Know Before Your First CrossFit Workout

By now, you have probably heard of CrossFit. It was named a top fitness trend in 2014 and it has been growing in global popularity ever since. CrossFit is often described as a core strength and conditioning program. This particular "genre" of fitness optimizes and enhances "physical competency," building strength, stamina, balance and more. With daily rotating workouts, you can always count on an intense regimen that will challenge your body in new ways.

Considering trying out CrossFit for the first time? Here are three things you need to know before your workout:

Don't underestimate what you're about to do. Whether you're training for a marathon or just hitting the gym a few times each week, it might be easy to brush off a particular WOD (workout of the day). But a sequence of pull-ups, squats and a sprint should not be underestimated. CrossFit workouts intensify quickly, thanks to the speed and rugged moves. Be prepared for a challenging full-body workout - no matter how fit you might be feeling.

Study up on the basic moves before you go. Moves such as burpees and squats are fundamental workouts to any CrossFit session. Because CrossFit focuses on core strength and conditioning, you can definitely count on a full-body workout that uses your own bodyweight with the equipment. Be ready for the unexpected gym fixtures. While it might seem that CrossFit covers only the basics, don't be surprised to see equipment in the gym when you arrive. Rowing machines and AirDyne® stationary bikes have grown in popularity throughout the CrossFit community. These machines require the user to work the equipment using body power and strength - no electricity needed.
