The Gift of Optimism

It's a brand new year, hurrah! And with it came the onslaught of resolutions and ways we intend to become better, and stronger, and wiser, and neater, and… and all the stuff that we probably dropped before reading this blog post. Don't you hate that let down feeling when you let all your best intentions slide one by one until you're back to where you started from? Well, it doesn't have to be that way.

My sister constantly marvels at my sense of optimism. I haven't always had the easiest time in life, but I almost always try to find a way of looking at things that highlight hope and not despair. And believe it or not, I think there's something to be said for dropping all of your New Year's resolutions. Seriously. Stick with me for a moment.

Isn't it amazing that no matter how many times you've failed in the past, come the next New Year you're ready to start all over again? I think that is enough cause for celebration. You may have failed in the past, you might even fail again, but you believe in yourself enough to keep trying year after year.

So go ahead. Resolve to take better care of yourself. You think it's worth it and I suspect that one of these days all of your best intentions will become second nature. You've had so much practice trying to change, one of these days the changes will stick. This might be your year after all!
