The Best Ways to Wear Marsala

Every year, Pantone announces a color of the year, with the color for 2015 being Marsala, a warm wine or maroon shade. Despite the announcement coming in the early part of the year, the color chose is best worn for fall. So, if you've been mostly sartorially sluggish this year and want to up your fashion game in the final quarter, try one of these ideas:

  • On your face: While Marsala can be flattering, it's a tough color to wear. Try wearing a sheer shade on your lips, or a subtle dusting on cheekbones. If you're tempted to wear wine on your eyes, it's best in moderation; consider a very thin line on your upper lid or a tinted mascara, but avoid eyeshadow in wine shades since it can make eyes look puffy.
  • Accessories: From shoes, to coats, to handbags, a key accessory in the chicest color of the season can make even the most basic wardrobe look updated.
  • Pants, ties, details: If you're bored of jeans or khakis, invest in one good pair of well-tailored pants or an accent piece. Another great way to wear a new shade is in a patterned jacket with only a color accent. In this way you can wear it for several seasons and still look stylish.
