Spring Pick Me Ups: Scarves and Shawls

As a born and bred New Yorker I wear head-to-toe black far too often (every day) and in every season (yes, I have summer black). Since we're in full-fledged springtime, I'm really trying to embrace pastels, but not having the easiest time of things.

If you're not necessarily into softer spring colors or ubiquitous seasonal florals and patterns, you can cheat by adding a scarf to even your jeans and t-shirt for an updated spring look.

  • Scarves and Shawls: When the weather is nearly warm with a slight nip in the air, you can add an open weave lightweight shawl to your outfit. Neutral colors or earth tones aren't as memorable and can still lighten up the look, while bright aqua or hot pink can make you look more seasonal.
  • Small Square Scarves or neck kerchiefs are extremely hot this season. Choose a nautical print (anchors!) or go for a wild mixed pattern. Since it's a small area of fabric, you can seem a lot more adventurous and fashion forward than you actually are.
  • Pocket Squares can be folded in a variety of ways to add flare to your jacket and it's not a look limited to business suits. Choose pattern on pattern variations like a striped tie with a polka dotted pocket square. And women can wear the trend as well. Just choose a fun silk square and fold into the pocket of your denim jacket or shirt dress for a little flair.
