Bowflex Six-Pack Interviews: Matt Lanter of NBC's Timeless

Matt Lanter is an American actor, voice actor and model. He stars as soldier Wyatt Logan in NBC's Timeless and as the voice of Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels.

We caught up with Matt to ask a sizzlin' six-pack of fitness questions. Did we get rock-solid answers? Absolutely! Check it out below:

  1. Matt, what is your favorite and least favorite form of exercise?

Matt: This one is double-edged for me. I would say outdoor running is both my favorite and least favorite. I love getting outside and feeling the wind on my face. I love trekking new terrain. The problem is, running, for me, is hard on my knees. I had a wake boarding accident when I was younger so the constant impact of running on them gets to me.

  2. Fast forward to today. As an active guy in Hollywood – on set, preparing for roles, what challenges have you faced when it comes to staying fit?

Matt: It's always a challenge. Time commitment is a big struggle. I'm fortunately pretty busy with industry stuff and helping my wife run her blog and YouTube [channel]. Just finding the hour or so to work out every day can be challenging. That's probably something that pretty much everyone faces though. I think that the TV and film business also puts a pressure to look a certain way which can be frustrating, but I guess it is what it is.

  3. Fitness motivation is a constant struggle for many of us. Where does your motivation come from, and what do you do to stay motivated?

Matt: Of course you could approach this from a vanity perspective, but I think that if you are keeping fit just for the sake of "looking good", you will fail. It really has to come from a place of wanting to be healthy, happy, and treating your body as it was built to be.

  4. What does your current diet and fitness routine look like?

Matt: Firstly, I always try to make water a priority. Staying hydrated is key, especially here in dry Southern California. I've been using my Bowflex Max Trainer at least 4 times a week and have been really happy. I may try to go out and hike or do some other type of outdoor cardio once or twice a week as well. Also, I'm lifting weights around 4 times a week. I would like to do better about incorporating some more yoga type exercise so my muscles can stretch and not just build from weights.

As far as diet, I don't really have a set diet. I just try to make smart choices such as no soda, xylitol in coffee as opposed to sugar. I try to stay away from sugary juices. I will usually have some type of fish 2-3 times a week and my wife and I like to cook a whole chicken either in the crock pot or Instapot once a week. I love a good clean lemon pepper chicken with some barley on the side. I'm a dessert guy, but when I'm trying to dial in, I either don't do it, or I'll opt for a much healthier type of "ice cream" such as Halo Top or something like that.

  5. What made you gravitate toward the Bowflex Max Trainer M7?

Matt: I came across it on the internet somehow. I think what caught my attention was the amount of calories that can be burned in such a short time. It goes back to the struggle of trying to fit exercise into the schedule. The Bowflex Max Trainer allows me to sweat it out, burning hundreds of calories in a 14-minute workout. It can be tough, but you really feel accomplished after your workout!

  6. Any words of wisdom for those who are currently starting their fitness journey?

Matt: Honestly, start slow. You don't have to be a superhero. Start incorporating more permanent diet changes and lifestyle. Don't just go out and cut all of your favorite foods cold turkey... you won't be able to sustain that. Cut some of it at first, choose smaller portions. Just ease into it and you will be able to sustain that much easier as time goes on.
