‘Tis the season for … achoo! … the cold and flu.

Last year’s flu season in the U.S. turned out to be the longest in a decade, coming in at 21 weeks. While in the past, flu season peaked in February, it is now hanging around longer and is easier to catch. When people with the flu sneeze, cough or even just breathe, it releases germs into the air – making it even harder to navigate these germs.

So, how do you avoid getting sick in the first place?

While getting your flu vaccination is the best thing you can do for yourself since it protects you from the most common virus strains, there are some strains of the flu that the vaccine doesn’t cover.

So beyond getting your flu shot, here are some tips to combat the flu and that offer extra protection against illness this season – because no one has time to be sick:

  • Wash. Your. Hands. A person washing their hands.

Something so simple can go a long way. Your hands touch many surfaces throughout the day and some may be contaminated. By washing your hands, you eliminate the chance of carrying the bug and infecting yourself or those around you. People get the flu when the virus makes contact with a mucosal membrane, such as your eyes, mouth and nose – so do your best to keep your hands away from your face!

  • Catch Some ZZZZZZs

Your body needs to rest and reset to maintain an optimal immune system. On average, you should get 7-9 hours of sleep a night according to the National Sleep Foundation. Further, take time to relax. If you are stressed and sleep-deprived, your body struggles to maintain your immune system – leaving you more susceptible to illness.

  • Exercise Muscles & Your Immune System

Just another reason to hit your favorite Bowflex machine. Working out helps flush out bacteria, boost your body’s immune system, and prevent bacteria from growing in your body. However, it is important to be careful if you get the flu, wait up to two weeks before exercising again as your body is still recovering, even after the symptoms are gone.

  • Stock Up On Your Vitamins

The best vitamins to take during flu season are Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Zinc, and prebiotic fiber. You can easily do this by taking a multivitamin every day and eating a balanced diet. Taking daily vitamins equips your body with the nutrients it needs to better combat any viruses that you come in contact with.

  • Drink Up!

Considering our bodies are made up of 60% water, you should aim to drink eight glasses of water a day – which equals about 2 liters or half a gallon. By staying hydrated, you help your body flush out toxins and bacteria that could lead to illness.
