Top 5 Reasons to Exercise at Home

I have spent the better part of my life in the fitness clubs: As a gym member, a personal trainer, a group fitness instructor, and, yes, I even owned an 11,000 square foot full-service gym for a few years. Now? The majority of my workouts take place either outside or at home, and I couldn't be happier.

If you have a home, you have a home gym. You don't need a lot of space or a lot of equipment to get started, either. You can work out in front of the TV, in your basement, in the garage, in your backyard or even in your bedroom. Here are the top 5 reasons you should exercise at home:

  1. Time

If the number one reason people give for not exercising is lack of time, one simple solution is to do it at home. Think about it: In the time it takes you to get to the gym you can already be finished with your 14-minute Bowflex Max workout.

  2. Privacy

Many people are self-conscious about exercising in a public environment, especially when they are not feeling particularly good about their bodies. When you work out at home you don't have to give any thought to what you are wearing, how you look, or worry about unwanted attention. Except if you have a dog. Dogs can make doing push-ups and planks even more difficult.

  3. Money

Why waste money on a gym membership when you can invest it in fitness equipment for your home? Your entire family can use it and you can purchase exactly what you want.

  4. Adherence

Roughly 60 percent of people who join a gym stop going after just a few months. A large majority of these people continue to pay their monthly dues regardless, often for years on end. Get into the habit of exercising at home, start to see results and you will be much more likely to stick with it.

  5. Fitness Technology

Thanks to the meteoric rise of fitness technology there has never been a better time to exercise at home. Both the internet and the plethora of fitness apps give you access to an unending amount and variety of workouts, information, tools and community, oftentimes for little or no cost.
