As we get into the swing of summer and weather reaches peak temperatures, it’s common to want to crack open a beer or prepare a cocktail to cool off. However, after a string of summer get-togethers over drinks, you may find yourself feeling sluggish and unmotivated, and questioning that last beer you had.

While alcohol can often be associated with going out, having fun and catching up with friends, the side effects can make you second guess that decision, especially as you get older and the effects of alcohol take longer to recover from.

If you are thinking of reexamining your drinking habits and cutting back on your alcohol intake, you can look forward to these health benefits:

Eat less

If you find yourself shunning your healthy diet after a few drinks, you are not alone. A study by the American Journal of Nutrition found that moderate drinkers reported poorer diets on days that they drank. In addition, another study found that drinking alcohol greatly increased food consumption. So next time you are looking to keep your eating in check, alcohol should not be part of the equation.

Sleep well

While alcohol may allow you to fall asleep faster, several studies have found that it disrupts your sleep pattern and keeps you from receiving a restful night’s sleep. Lack of quality sleep has been known to have several negative health effects, including higher risk of heart attack, depression and impaired breathing; so skip the evening cocktail next time you need a restful night of sleep.

Be better hydrated

Alcohol acts as a diuretic, which can increase fluid loss and dehydration, and can cause you to feel sluggish. By skipping your usual cocktail and replacing it with water or other non-alcoholic drinks, you will be better hydrated. Additionally, being well-hydrated improves your skin and can help you have a clearer complexion and look younger.

Lose weight

In combination with reducing your alcohol intake and the already mentioned benefits of eating less and sleeping better, you may find yourself losing weight or avoiding packing on pounds altogether as a result of cutting back on alcohol. One study conducted by the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found that those who binge drank alcohol at least once a month over the course of a year were 41% more likely to become overweight after a five-year period.
